Actually I think it was the northeastern part – it was an open area with lots of grasses and Joshua trees not far from the main road that loops around and goes back up to 29 Palms. I entered both days via Joshua Tree; the first day I slowly drove around (and of course pulled over and stopped many times) the north end. The second day I went all the way down to the southern end, exited (for food, drinks and gas!) and then drove back up to Joshua Tree – a long drive, but one that really shows the difference between the Mojave and the Colorado/Sonoran deserts.
